DESCRIPTION OF VIDEO:
Hey there everyone! Aviators and everyone else. Welcome to another video on Delta Bravo Tango! Today, we have for you all a very special video. It is a review of my flight that I took from Montreal to Toronto on Air Canada 479. The Full Trip Report Online has already been published on my channel, this video is a review on answering the question of whether or not Air Canada should be the Best North American carrier. The answer to that is in the video, as well as my opinion on whether or not I enjoy flying with the national carrier in our country. Once again, thank you for watching and as always, stay flying and have a great day to y'all!

A Day in the Life of Air Traffic Over the United States
Courtesy NASA
FACET is a simulation tool for exploring advanced air traffic management concepts.
An efficient and effective air traffic management system is vital to the U.S. transportation infrastructure. Since 1978, when the airline industry was deregulated, the inflation adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) has increased by 62 percent. In this same time period, total output of scheduled passenger air transportation (as measured by Revenue Passenger Miles) has increased by 190 percent and total airfreight ton miles have increased by 289 percent. Since 1997, flight delays have skyrocketed - doubling in only four years. These trends are expected to continue. In 1998, airline delays in the U.S. cost industry and passengers $4.5 billion -- the equivalent of a 7 percent tax on every doll...

North Bay, Ontario is the headquarters for the 22nd NORAD region (1:04-1:33). A government car drives into the granite entrance of the three-story complex (1:34-1:53). More than 600 feet below ground is the SAGE (semi-automatic ground environment control system). A diagram is shown of the 10,000 feet of tunnels before the car continues driving through the darkness, its red revolving light shown turning and flashing (1:54-3:02). The airman arrives and enters the building (3:03- 3:23). A pointer highlights on the map the continent’s geographical areas for the air defense of both countries (3:24-4:17). The airman picks up a phone and turns on switches and dials on the system. A rapid succession of equipment images is shown (4:18-4:50). The facility has kitchen and dining facilities (shown), a hospital and infirmary, a canteen, wash rooms, and showers. It also has underground generators (4:51-5:05). Airmen are seen wearing headsets and viewing an air traffic control screen (5:06-5:32). The ‘warning line’ is shown on the map, and the 22nd is responsible for the four distant early warning sites in the Canadian Arctic as well as other radar points (5:33-6:28). Pilots scramble to their planes, which take off and fly in pairs (6:29-7:44). For training purposes, a T-33 Shooting Star “T-Bird” has intruded. The lead Voodoo moves closer to make visual contact while the second drops back to take action if the intruder becomes hostile (7:45-8:40). The training exercise over, all three planes land, with the drogue parachute shown activated on one CF-101 (8:41-19:20).
The McDonnell CF-101 Voodoo was an all-weather interceptor aircraft operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Forces between 1961 and 1984. They were manufactured by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri for the United States Air Force (as F-101s), and later sold to Canada. CF-101s replaced the obsolete Avro CF-100 Canuck in the RCAF's all-weather fighter squadrons. The Voodoo's primary armament was nuclear AIR-2A Genie unguided air-to-air rockets, and there was significant political controversy in Canada about their adoption. Although they never fired a weapon in wartime, the CF-101 served as Canada's primary means of air defence from Quick Reaction Alert facilities at Canadian airbases. The CF-101s were retired in the 1980s and replaced with McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet fighters. Many examples are preserved in museums and parks in Canada and the United States.

On 8 June 1966, XB-70A No. 2 was in close formation with four other aircraft (an F-4 Phantom, an F-5, a T-38 Talon, and an F-104 Starfighter) for a photoshoot at the behest of General Electric, manufacturer of the engines of all five aircraft. After the photoshoot, the F-104 drifted into the XB-70's right wing, flipped and rolled inverted over the top of the Valkyrie, before striking the bomber's vertical stabilizers and left wing. The F-104 then exploded, destroying the Valkyrie's rudders and damaging its left wing. With the loss of both rudders and damage to the wings, the Valkyrie entered an uncontrollable spin and crashed north of Barstow, California. NASA Chief Test Pilot Joe Walker (F-104 pilot) and Carl Cross (XB-70 co-pilot) were killed. Al White (XB-70 pilot) ejected, sustaining serious injuries, including the crushing of his arm by the closing clamshell-like escape crew capsule moments prior to ejection.

Originally conceived as a supersonic bomber, the North American XB-70A Valkyrie instead became the world's largest experimental research aircraft, flying from September 21, 1964, until February 4, 1969.
Two experimental prototypes of the XB-70A were under construction when the bomber program was canceled. At the same time there was growing interest in an American supersonic transport (SST), and the Valkyrie seemed a perfect testbed for SST research. The two prototypes were kept alive for a joint NASA-Air Force flight research program.
The Flight Research Center (FRC -- later the Dryden Flight Research Center) had several SST studies underway in the early 1960's. Its Douglas F5D-1 was used for landing studies, a North American F-100C was modified to simulate SST handling qualities, a North American A-5A was used to develop ways an SST would operate in the air traffic control system, and a Lockheed JetStar was modified as an in-flight SST simulator. But the XB-70A was the first transport-sized aircraft capable of sustained, long-range supersonic flight. Its research programs had a significant impact on American SST efforts at the time and could influence the design of future large, supersonic aircraft.
Although intended to cruise at Mach 3, the first aircraft was found to have poor directional stability above Mach 2.5, and it never flew faster than Mach 2.55 in its flight research at the NASA FRC between 1967 and 1969. However, NASA Ames wind-tunnel studies led North American Aviation, Downey, California, to build its sister ship with an added 5 degrees of dihedral on the wings. It handled much better, and achieved Mach 3.08 on April 12, 1966. Two months later it was lost in a mid-air collision during a formation photo flight.
One of the unique features of the Valkyries were the variable outer wing panels. These were left undeflected at subsonic speeds to take advantage of the full wingspan and wing area and to increase the lift-to-drag ratio and improve takeoff and landing performance.
At supersonic speeds, adequate cruise lift-to-drag ratio could be developed with less wingspan, so the outer panels were folded down. Deflected, they reduced drag as the wingtips interacted with the inlet shock wave in the lower surface flow field. Lowering the wingtips also reduced the area behind the airplane center of gravity (cg). This phenomenon was important because as Mach number increased, the center of pressure moved rearward, so less area aft of the cg caused a reduction of trim drag. The outer panels also provided more vertical surface to improve directional stability.

This is a video about the types of air masses that affect North America. An Air mass is a large body of air that is similar in temperature throughout. Air masses are labeled based on two things; if the air is dry or moist and the temperature of the air. If the air mass is formed over land then it is dry and called Continental. If the air mass is formed over water then it is moist and called Maritime. There are three classifications for temperature. The coldest types of air masses are called Arctic. These are very bitter and are formed near the poles. Next are Polar air masses. These air masses have cold air. The third type is tropic air masses. These consist of warm air. Now put these two qualifications together to decide what type of air mass it is. If it is above the poles then the air mass is called Continental Arctic. If the air mass is dry and cold then it is called Continental Polar. If the air mass is warm and dry it is called Continental Tropic. If the air is wet and cold then it is called Maritime Polar. If the air mass is warm and moist then it is called Maritime Tropic. Now lets talk about some places that that these air masses form. A continental arctic air mass might be formed over northern Canada. A continental polar air mass might be formed over southern Canada or northern United States. A Maritime Polar air mass might be formed over the ocean off the coast of New England. A Continental Tropic Air mass might be formed over Mexico. A Maritime Tropic air mass might be formed over the Gulf of Mexico. As a quick recap, Air masses can be dry or moist and vary in temperature. These qualities are determined based off of where the Air masses are formed and are how the air masses are labeled. This concludes our video of the types of Air masses that affect North America.

In 1998, airline delays in the U.S. cost industry and passengers $4.5 billion -- the equivalent of a 7 percent tax on every dollar collected by all the domestic airlines combined.
